CARING FOR WOOD SURFACES: WOOD OIL

To keep your wood furniture moisturized and protected, we recommend using a wood oil to keep your wood surface looking its best. Keeping wood properly moisturized prolongs the life of your wood furniture.

JUNCTION WOOD WOOD TONIC

Wood tonic is handmade in small batches. It is the result of years of research and experimentation with many types of oils. The final recipe is a blend of natural oils that effectively moisturize and add lustre to any wood surface. This oil is food safe, and extremely useful on cutting boards and butcher blocks as well. The oil has been scented with high quality essential oils (lemon, sage and thyme) which also have antimicrobial qualities. Wood Tonic is available through our workshop, website or pop-up shows in 60 or 100 ml bottles.

JOHN BOOS MYSTERY OIL

This basic oil is a mix of white mineral oil and beeswax. It seeps into wood nicely and leaves a foodsafe finish. This product is available at www.russellhendrix.com

WHITE MINERAL OIL

High grade white mineral oils work well to keep wood moisturized, and are a woodworker’s staple. This is a petroleum product that is available in many formulations, so ensure that you choose one that is labeled food grade. The benefit of this oil is that it does not go rancid like most natural oils (hemp, olive, and other nut and seed oils). It is available in most drug stores.

    FRACTIONATED COCONUT OIL

Although not easy to source, this is a wonderful natural oil to use on a wood surface. Fractionated coconut oil is extremely stable and does not go rancid. We use this oil as a base in our Wood Tonic. It has a non-greasy finish and can be applied safely by hand without having to wear gloves. In fact, it is great for your skin!

    FREQUENCY:

For any of the above products, we recommend using with the following frequency:

    • cutting boards or butcher blocks: every 3-4 weeks
    • wood furniture: every 1-3 months

WOOD TONIC is a blend of fractionated coconut oil and mineral oil (a woodworker's staple) that will moisturize and add lustre to any wood surface.

This oil is foodsafe, and is excellent on cutting boards.

With regular use of Wood Tonic, cutting boards retain their lustre, and the oil creates a surface barrier so bacteria does not seep into the porous surface. As an added bonus, lemon, thyme and sage essential oils have antimicrobial qualities and a fresh natural scent.
